2017 Dominican Republic Mission

The Franciscan & Friends Music Mission, an ecumenical fellowship based in Calgary Canada celebrates 12 years of ministry in Central America and the Caribbean in 2017.

drep_encounterThe focus of the mission has been in response to the various needs of the poor whom we encounter on our annual visits.

For the past 3 years we have been working in the Dominican Republic.

We have been blessed with excellent partners in the DR who have helped us connect with the poorest of the poor.

A mission trip includes several specific activities.

hfa_logoHarps for Angels
is a music program that provides free harmonicas and instruction to young people in orphanages, schools and Bateys (Haitian Communities located in the sugar cane fields) On average we bring 100 harmonicas on each mission.

Medical Supplies
Since public health is virtually non-existent to the broader population of the poor, we bring as much medical help as we can to the front line workers. They have advised us on the essentials they need to help the sick.

Sports Equipment
The Dominican Republic provides more players to major league baseball than any other country outside the USA. In response to the local passion for the game we bring cases of baseballs to distribute to poor children.

Each mission includes visits to recovery groups who help those suffering from addictions to get well. We bring recovery literature in Spanish and attend meetings.

Concerts Delegate Musicians bring their instruments and perform free concerts with local musicians in churches and public settings.
Mission Delegates We allow for a time of retreat on each Mission. Quiet reflective time in a beautiful landscape has offered us a refreshing time with God.
As a registered Canadian Charity we do local fundraising events to empower us to purchase a sundry of the supplies we take each year.
